Two Hearts, One Chance
Twin girls in Eritrea successfully operated on
Möhnesee/Asmara, October 2025. They are only nine months old, identical twins – two girls, two identical diagnoses, but without treatment hardly any future. With this dramatic initial situation, the children were presented in October 2025 to the international cardiac surgery team of Fondazione Monasterio Massa – Mission Bambini at Orotta Hospital Asmara. The twins suffered from a complex ventricular septal defect of the malalignment type, combined with a rare anatomical malformation of the innominate vein. The severe congenital heart defect had already led to pulmonary overload and significant growth impairment. Without rapid intervention, both girls would have developed irreversible pulmonary hypertension – with a fatal outcome in early adulthood.
Despite this highly complex initial situation, the team succeeded in operating on both children successfully. The twins are currently stable in the intensive care unit and are being closely monitored. Their story symbolizes what medical expertise, international cooperation, and timely access to healthcare can achieve: a real chance at life.
The Italian team’s mission included a total of 220 pediatric cardiology examinations, 25 operations, and 76 follow-up treatments for children who had been operated on during previous missions. In addition, the mission team placed great emphasis on training and educating local professionals – including Eritrean cardiac surgeons, pediatric cardiologists, surgical teams, and nursing staff. The aim is to gradually create the conditions necessary to treat severe congenital heart defects in the country itself in the long term.
With the subsequent mission of the Med Action Bambini con Elias ODV team, the work will continue immediately – a sign that humanitarian medicine is most effective when it not only heals, but also empowers.
