We have been supporting children in Afghanistan since November 2021. We concluded our emergency aid program for the Indira Gandhi Children’s Hospital in Kabul in the spring of 2024 after more than two years.
Despite a degree of stabilization in urban areas, the healthcare system in rural Afghanistan remains dysfunctional and urgently dependent on support from international donors. According to a recent study by the World Health Organization, over 18 million people in Afghanistan still lack access to basic medical care. The lack of medical care hits women and children particularly hard. Within a very short period, maternal and child mortality in Afghanistan has risen sharply again. One of the main problems is that the few health facilities in the periphery are neither well-equipped nor do they have sufficient financial resources. People must therefore travel long distances to receive adequate treatment. Often, this help is not free of charge, meaning most families cannot afford it at all or must go into immense debt.

ARCHEMED intends to intervene here and improve healthcare for mothers and children in the Afghan provinces. In this endeavor, we will draw on the extensive expertise of the Afghan Women’s Association (AFV) based in Hamburg, whose statutory goal is medical and humanitarian aid for girls and women in Afghanistan, particularly in remote rural areas. The association has more than 200 local employees on-site who guarantee correct project implementation and evaluation.
In close cooperation and consultation with the AFV, a community health facility (“Maternal and Child Clinic”) was opened in Kariz Mir in April 2025 through our financial support. Here, women and children receive free access to basic medical care, ranging from prenatal care and birth assistance to vaccinations and basic and emergency care for infants and children. Approximately 16,000 people are treated here annually.
